We are looking for experienced and forward-thinking Lead Software Engineer/Technical Lead to join our Survey Data Collection (SDC) Service within our Digital Services and Technology (DST) Directorate. The Service is building on the successes of Census to provide a generic, scalable and secure product set to enable contact with all respondents via email, letter and SMS, maximising response rates. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to work in an area of high impact change and support the longer-term ambitions of DST, ONS and wider Government.

As Technical Lead, you will lead the design, build, support and improvement of new and existing digital products using a range of approaches including SDLC, CI/CD and DevSecOps to ensure we deliver value early for our users. This is a pivotal role working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary delivery team with the SDC Service, which significantly contributes to ONS statistical outputs, improving Government decision making.

As a highly experienced & accomplished professional, you'll be confident working with a range of different technical areas, such as software design & development, test, technical architecture, infrastructure (as code) and different hosting options; including Cloud (i.e. PaaS, IaaS). Ideally GCP including GKE, Cloud SQL, Kubernetes, PUB/SUB.

In addition, you'll be comfortable leading a team in an agile environment, pioneering new approaches and forming standards and approaches. You'll be confident in shaping the technical landscape of the product and ensuring secure design, with expertise in building software and CI/CD (ideally with experience using Concourse and GitHub). Understanding how to run a live system, running a live system, ensuring that logging, monitoring and alerting are built into the solution is also within your capabilities.

Expertise in Java, Python and Go are important for the role, along with familiarity with a range of software products & technologies; as well as a proven ability to select and apply them effectively, taking into account accessibility & reusability.
